And Then There Were None

Chinie Barunday

By Agatha Christie

A mysterious story that would send goose bumps to the readers and it's a game of mind. Different crimes committed by the characters and there are ten people, all strangers to each other that were invited to Soldier Island, off the English coast. Vera Claythorne, a former governess, thinks she has been hired as a secretary; Philip Lombard, an adventurer, and William Blore, an ex-detective, think they have been hired to look out for trouble over the weekend; Dr. Armstrong thinks he has been hired to look after the wife of the island’s owner. Emily Brent, General Macarthur, Tony Marston, and Judge Wargrave think they are going to visit old friends. When they arrive on the island, the guests are greeted by Mr. And Mrs. Rogers, the butler and housekeeper, who report that the host, someone they call Mr. Owen, will not arrive until the next day. That evening, as all the guests gather in the drawing-room after an excellent dinner, they heard a recorded voice accusing each of them, of a specific murder committed in the past and never uncovered. They compare notes and realize that none of them, including the servants, knows “Mr. Owen,” which suggests that they were brought here according to someone’s strange plan (Spark notes, n.d.).

The mystery novel entitled And then there were none written by Christie Agatha depicted many social issues, and one of them is attaining justice. Many people are suffering from inequality, especially when it comes to justice. The characters in this story are suspects who committed a different crime. It means that in reality this kind of problem still exists in this world in which some murderers have been able to escape.

According to Jan, the theme of this book is mostly mystery because whenever someone dies, they become more suspicious and started watching each other. Eventually, they would come to conclusions, but they would never be right because the murderer is someone who you will least expect. The theme of this book is also a tiny bit of horror because 10 strangers went inside a modern house which matches the same amount of china figures. When a china figure broke or disappears, it represents that a guest has died, which I find a bit creepy and scary.

Wargrave thinks that those murder victims deserve their deaths. However, killing people who have sinned or violated the law is still not an act of good revenge. What he did only shows that he is the same to them. When it comes to justice some people do not deserve to be killed just because they were accused as suspects. Just like Emily Brent, who doesn't really kill her servant and deserves less punishment. Another thing is those characters who deny their crimes are tormented by guilt in private which causes them to commit suicide.

It taught us to be responsible for our actions and to face every problem. If you have done something wrong or worse committed a crime, it's better to solve it and face the consequences. The right time always comes and you will pay for it if you don't tell the truth. We should always choose to be mindful and do not trust people too easily.

“One little Indian left all alone, he went out and hanged himself and then there were none.”
